After an encouraging first outing under new manager Jack Wells at Ware, the Ducks faced familiar foes Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Cup this evening. The match saw Wells make wholesale changes, with only 4 players who started at Ware on Saturday retaining their places; 3 players made their first competitive start for the team, 17 year old Josh Ameganvi replacing the rested Jack Hopwood in goal, Reece Bayliss in place of Luis Fernandes at left back and Harry Williams in place of Herbie Townsend in midfield. Restored to the line up were Jake Bewley after serving his 3 match suspension in place of Jordan Jenkins and George Joyce at right back in place of the unavailable Harry Jones; finally, Lee Stobbs returned in place of Alfie Anderson and Pierce McNamara starting instead of Sonny French.
The opening exchanges predictably saw the 'visitors' from Chesham dominate the play, passing the ball around well, without threatening to trouble Ameganvi in the home goal. The first hint of danger came from a deep corner, delivered by Jack Connors, which was met at the far post by Ronnie Mfinda, but his header was wide of the target.
The Ducks had a great chance to take the lead in the 38th minute, when a good run by Nasha Mukwada saw him beat Alison Ferreira on the left flank, before playing a dangerous pass into the 6 yard box, but David Aluko-Olukun was agonisingly short of reaching the ball.
In the 46th minute a long free kick from Connors into the penalty area was headed clear to Donte Thompson-Prempeh, but his shot from 20 yards was wide of the target.
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-0 Chesham
An early change in the second half saw Fernandes replace Bayliss at left back; he was quickly into the game in his defensive role, chasing a scooped pass over his head by Kyle Brooks, doing enough to put pressure on Jack Smith, resulting in his shot being wide of the near post.
Just before the hour mark Jordan Gibbons collected the ball in midfield but his shot from distance was wide of the right post. Shortly afterwards Chesham made 4 changes in an attempt to change their shape and the direction of the game.
In the 64th minute a corner from the left was met by Mfinda whose header was cleared off the line, with some in the crowd claiming a goal.
As so often this season, the closing minutes proved to be the Ducks downfall, with two late goals giving Chesham the win. Seven minutes from time T’Sharne Gallimore played a classy pass inside Joyce finding loanee Tobias Braney, who took a touch and curled a shot past Ameganvi into the far corner to score on his debut. 1-0 Chesham
Despite barely threatening the goal in the second half, the Ducks had a great chance to score an unlikely equaliser as the clock reached 90 minutes. Stobbs played a deep corner to the far post, where Joyce rose highest to head the ball, but his effort lacked power and was comfortably claimed by Sam Beasant.
As the game entered the 4th minute of added on time, poor defending gifted a second; a corner on the left was presided over by Smith and Jordan Edwards, initially content to keep the ball in the corner and run down the clock, before Smith burst away and along the goal line, beating 4 defenders before clipping the ball past Ameganvi. 2-0 Chesham
Next up for the Ducks is a long trip to Cirencester Town on Saturday, we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible to cheer the Ducks on.
