After the fine win at second placed Biggleswade FC the week before, manager Jack Wells understandably chose to keep the same line up and formation for the visit of Ware FC. The visitors, although secure in the play off places were searching a last day win to enhance their chances of a higher place finish and a home draw in the play off semi finals.
After a foul by Jordan Jenkins on the edge of the penalty area, Sam Chaney stepped up to take the free kick, but saw the defensive wall block his effort from 20 yards.
Soon afterwards Tyriq Hunte collected the ball in the centre circle and shrugged off the challenges of three defenders, before finding Harry Jones wide on the left; he returned a pass to Hunte who shot from just outside the penalty area, but straight at keeper Fred Burbidge.
In the 9th minute Chris Arthur did well down the left and passed inside to Liam Dulson, who saw his shot from the edge of the penalty area saved by the feet of Jack Hopwood.
In what was becoming an entertaining game for the large crowd, Sonny French did well to chase a seemingly lost cause and win the ball, before passing the ball inside to Hunte who played the ball inside the defence for the run of Jack Moriarty, however his shot from 15 yards was straight at Burbidge.
Dulson had another great opportunity on 20 minutes, when a pass from Dan Rumens saw him in space on the left; he cut inside but his shot from 15 yards was well saved by Jack Hopwood.
The Ducks almost pressed the self destruct button in the 33rd minute, when a short goal kick to Jenkins saw the defender closed down and tackled, with the ball falling to Rechan Esprit, but his shot was deflected off Jack Wood and over the bar for a corner.
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-0 Ware
Into the second half and the visitors continued to press; two minutes into the half, Theo Ofori cut in from the right and played a reverse pass to strike partner Esprit who took a shot from 18 yards, but saw his effort fly wide of the target.
In the 52nd minute, substitute Richard Bryan made good ground down the right and cut into the penalty area before seeing his shot from 15 yards saved on the goal line by Jack Wood, with Hopwood beaten. Three minutes later Hopwood did well to deny Ofori, coming off his line quickly to narrow the angle as Ofori broke into the penalty area, diving at his feet to claim the ball before the striker could get a shot away.
The Ducks almost opened the scoring shortly afterwards, when a deep corner was headed down by Wood to Jenkins, who swivelled and hooked the ball goalwards, but saw Burbidge make a good save.
On the hour mark, Wells made a change, replacing Jenkins with Ezra Anthonio-Forde, seeing a change of shape, with more attacking intent the result. The substitution did the trick, as Anthonio-Forde opened the scoring in the 70th minute. French won the ball on half way and spotted the striker wide on the righty; he cut inside Arthur and dribbled towards the penalty area, before guiding a left foot shot inside the near post, giving Burbidge no chance. 1-0 Aylesbury
With 3 minutes remaining on the clock the visitors came close to equalising, a free kick from Bryan was net on the volley by Louis Rose at the far post, but his effort was wildly off target, clearing the cross bar.
A second goal in the game did arrive in the 88th minute and it was the Ducks who scored it. A clearance by Mark Riddick was flicked over his own head by Anthonio-Forde, before playing the ball down the left flank to French who was overlapping; he spotted the run of Hunte to the far post, who was left unmarked to tap home from 6 yards to double the lead. 2-0 Aylesbury
It wouldn’t be a Ducks game without some late drama, as the visitors scored a goal in the second minute of added on time; Bryan cut in from the right and fired a firm left foot shot past Hopwood from 15 yards. 1-2
There was a further late scare as the visitors applied late pressure, but thankfully the Ducks held firm to secure their 3rd win in successive games at the end of the season, to send the large crowd home happy.
So ends a season which has been far from straightforward, with the ever present threat of a relegation play off only dismissed in the final two weeks of the season, with the Ducks actually finishing 12 points clear of danger in 15th place in the league. As we all take a well earned break for the summer, thoughts will soon no doubt turn to the new season and the hope that the end of season form can be translated into a more consistent season ahead.
