After a blank weekend due to the postponement of the match against Biggleswade FC, the Ducks made the short journey to Creasey Park to take on AFC Dunstable. A couple of changes to the starting line up from the game against Enfield saw both Sonny French and Tom Cove make their first start since their return to the club, in place of the unavailable Will St Clair Burton and Ben Peters, who took a seat on the bench. Also on the bench were Kajetan Halatyn, now fully recovered from the hamstring strain that has seen the past 4 games and recent signing Adrijus Lapacinskas.
The hosts, who had also had their match at the weekend postponed, started well; ex Aylesbury player Rico Greco found space 25 yards from goal before firing in a shot on goal which went narrowly wide of Jack Hopwood’s goal.
A free kick from the left by Charley Tuttle was headed on by skipper Jack Wood to Kamil Zielinski who controlled well on the edge of the penalty area, but his shot was too high to trouble home keeper Seb Stacey. The keeper did very well two minutes later, a ball out of defence by Jake Bewley was flicked on by Zielinski to Luqman Kassim, who was clear of the defence with just Stacey to beat, but he was off his line very quickly to clear the danger.
In the 23rd minute young winger Khyan Frazer-Williams did well to get the better of Liam Batchelor-Morgan on the left, before crossing low to Greco 15 yards from goal, but his effort cleared the cross-bar.
The next attack saw Kassim steal the ball from Kwadwo Bugyei-Kyei on the left and passed to Cove, who shot from 25 yards, but straight at Stacey, who made a comfortable save. The first Ducks corner of the evening saw Ben Stallard's delivery headed out by Harry Riley to French on the edge of the penalty area; he took a touch and fired a shot which was deflected wide of target.
Just before the half hour Kyle Lynch found Greco 20 yards from goal; he turned and shot, but his effort was too close to Hopwood, who made a good save. Shortly afterwards Greco had another great opportunity thwarted by Hopwood; a ball over Batchelor-Morgan saw his clear on goal with just the Ducks keeper to beat, but not for the first time, Hopwood saved well with his legs. From the resulting corner Sean Duodo saw his effort at the far post blocked by Stallard and cleared from the danger area.
With half time approaching, a worrying sight for the Ducks fans as Bewley appeared to pull up injured after delivering a long ball into the penalty area; the start of the second half saw him replaced by Kian Henry for the remainder of the game.
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-0 AFC Dunstable
Two minutes after the restart Frazer-Williams collected the ball on the left side before passing to Duodo, whose shot from 15 yards was saved by Hopwood. A minute later, substitute Bruce Ovbiye-Nsang, on for ex-Duck George Joyce at half time, did well to find Greco just outside the penalty area, but his shot was saved at the second attempt by Hopwood.
Duodo had a great opportunity in the 50th minute; a ball forward saw him in space to get a shot away, but Wood was on hand to block his effort; the ball rebounded to Dudo, this time he lashed his shot over the bar.
The goal the vociferous Ducks fans were craving came in the 54th minute. A pass out of defence by Tuttle towards Cove saw the referee Stuart Smith play not one, but two good advantages, as first Riley lunged in on Cove as he played the ball on towards Kassim, who was also subject to a similar tackle from Stanley Georgiou before escaping down the flank and reaching the edge of the penalty area. He spotted Haziz Kone arriving on the edge of the penalty area and laid the ball on a plate for the midfielder, who hit a powerful side footed shot in off the underside of the cross-bar, with Stacey clutching at fresh air. 1-0 Aylesbury
On 65 minutes the hosts came close to an equaliser, a cross from the left was half cleared high in the air by Wood, falling to Tom Blennerhassett on the edge of the penalty area, who saw his powerful shot well saved by Hopwood.
Three minutes later and a fine passing move, involving Tuttle, Zielinski and French saw the ball reach Kassim on the right, who cut inside Bugyei-Kyei before shooting across goal, narrowly wide of the far post. Lapacinskas replaced Cove in the 70th minute to make his debut and came close to scoring with his first involvement in the game. A ball out of defence found Zielinski on half way, who slipped the ball into the path of the winger, who took a first time shot that was straight at Stacey.
Hopwood again came to Ducks rescue in the 74th minute, a corner from the left saw not one but two point blank attempts saved by the Ducks keeper, who was having an inspired evening in their goal.
With the game deep into added on time and the home side pressing for an equaliser in the face of some resolute defending, the Ducks had two final chances to close the game out; first Zielinski did well to hold the ball on the half way line before finding the run of Lapacinskas who outpaced the defence and shot from 20 yards, but saw his effort graze the far post and go out for a goal kick. Shortly afterwards a quick break saw the Ducks with a 3 on 1 advantage as Stallard collected the ball on half way; he used Zielinski and Lapacinskas as decoys as he made space for a shot, but saw his shot go narrowly wide of the goal.
The game ended shortly afterwards, leaving the travelling fans and the players united in delight at not just a good performance, but another 3 points on the road. The Ducks maintained their 4th place in the division, and an 8th clean sheet of the season, 7 of which have been in League matches. Next up is another blank Saturday, due to opponents Barton Rovers being engaged in an FA Trophy match on that day, before a Tuesday evening at the Meadow, with the visit of Kings Langley.
