The Ducks returned to the Meadow for the first time since the Boxing Day defeat to League leaders Berkhamsted, hoping to improve on their performance at Hertford Town four days earlier.
The injured Charley Tuttle sat out the match, with Jalke Bewley reverting to left back, with Kian Henry starting at centre back. Further forward, the only player to retain his place in the team was Haziz Kone, with a debut handed to Harry Stratton alongside Kone and the recalled Ben Stallard in midfield, with Kamil Zielinski, Morrison Hashii and Tom Cove making up the attacking three.
The visitors started well, striker Temi Akinbusoye did well down the left, beating both Henry and Bewley, before crossing to Rio Martucci on the edge of the penalty area, who saw his shot well blocked by Liam Batchelor-Morgan at the expense of a corner. Shortly afterwards, Batchelor-Morgan turned attacker, passing to Hashii down the right, who outpaced Michal Fisher and lobbed keeper Jasper Briggs as he came off his line; however, just as it looked as if the goal would be scored, Adam Hunt got back to clear the ball off the line.
After the opening exchanges, the game developed into something of a midfield battle, with neither side creating much in the way of clear-cut chances, and neither keeper being tested. The next opportunity fell the way of the visitors, as a throw in from Adam Wedd found Dan Bond, who turned and fired a shot from 25 yards which just curled over the corner of post and cross bar.
Three minutes later a long ball forward found Akinbusoye on the right of the penalty area; he pushed the ball past Bewley who mistimed his challenge, sending the striker to ground, resulting in referee Stuart Smith awarding a penalty. Bond stepped up to take the spot kick and fired the ball past the dive of Jack Hopwood into the keepers right hand corner. 1-0 Biggleswade
Just past the half hour, Hashii did well after collecting the ball in the centre circle, driving through the defence, before firing the ball just over the bar from 30 yards.
Biggleswade could have had a second goal on 34 minutes, when skipper Lawrie Marsh picked the ball up in midfield and made ground towards the penalty area unchallenged before finding Akinbusoye on the right side of the penalty area, but his shot was dragged across goal. The second goal did come though, a minute before the break; a corner taken by Ethan Kessell fell to Fisher who forced the ball goalwards where Dan Carey-Evans bundled the ball home. 2-0 Biggleswade
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-2 Biggleswade
Into the second half and a second penalty was awarded after Akinbusoye took the ball forward chased by Stallard and Bewley, before going to ground under a challenge. Bond stepped up to take the penalty again, but this time Hopwood guessed right, diving the same way to parry the ball, with Kessell following up unable to get his effort on target.
Boosted by the let-off, the Ducks had a good spell of play, with two great chances around the 70th minute. First Kone passed the ball wide to substitute Kacper Kloc, who returned the pass to Kone, who shot from 20 yards just wide of the far post. Then two minutes later an even better chance was created when Bewley made a good run down the left before crossing to Zielinski who had a shot saved by Briggs; the ball fell to Batchelor-Morgan, but his effort bounced off the post, the ball rebounding to Zielinski who saw his first time shot saved brilliantly by Briggs at point blank range, but in truth it should have been a goal.
Six minutes from the end of normal time Sonny French was fouled by Liam Chadwick 25 yards from goal. Bewley took the free kick and curled a delicious delivery onto the head of a diving Jack Wood, to reduce the arrears. 1-2
With the Ducks chasing an equaliser, Biggleswade broke out of defence in the 95th minute, with the ball played to Akinbusoye, who cut inside Henry but saw Hopwood come off his line quickly to block his shot.
The striker did get the goal his performance on the night had deserved in the 96th minute, another break saw substitute Lee Northfield play the ball into his path; Hopwood was again out smartly to block his first effort, but he remained calm and slotted home the rebound. 3-1 Biggleswade
So, another defeat, so work to do to get back to winning ways, the opportunity will come next against AFC Dunstable at the Meadow on Saturday.
