The final game of the season saw Enfield FC visit the Meadow, with manager Dave Tuttle choosing to rotate the squad after a busy Easter period. Returning to the starting XI after returning from injury were Charley Tuttle, Kian Henry and Benji Kakembo, with Maks Jarzabek, Kacper Kloc and Harry Stratton missing out.
On the back of a club record 12 match losing streak, the Ducks came out quickly, aiming to end that dismal run. The fast start was rewarded in the 6th minute, when a throw in from Liam Batchelor-Morgan was headed inside by Luqman Kassim to Will St Clair-Burton; he fed the ball on to Tom Cove in space on the edge of the centre circle, who advanced and unleashed a left foot shot from 25 yards which took an unpredictable bounce in front of goalkeeper George Edgeworth, who could only parry the ball into his net. 1-0 Aylesbury
Shortly afterwards a deep cross from Tuttle found St Clair-Burton 15 yards from goal, but his volley was deflected wide by Callum Taylor. With 25 minutes played, Tuttle played a free kick from the left towards Kakembo, but the striker saw his acrobatic volley go just the wrong side of the near post.
The first chance for the visitors came on the half hour; a corner from Joni Vukaj was met by Myles John at the far post, whose header back into the 6-yard box caused some panic in the Ducks defence, before St Clair-Burton scrambled the ball away from danger.
Two minutes later the Ducks saw a corner from Sonny French headed out to Tuttle, who hit a shot from 35 yards just wide of the right-hand post. That was to be Tuttle's last involvement in the game as he was substituted off with an injury shortly afterwards, to be replaced by Freddy Joyce.
Five minutes before the break a free kick was awarded for a foul on St Clair-Burton on the corner of the penalty area; Kassim stepped up and hit a fine free kick, which forced a fine save from Edgeworth at the expense of a corner. French took the inswinging corner from the left, which was punched out by Edgeworth to the edge of the penalty area, where Ben Peters did well to win the ball ahead of Freddy Moncur, who was flat footed in the 'D'. The ball fell to Jake Bewley 15 yards out who hit a fine right foot volley into the corner of the net to register his first goal of the season and double the lead. 2-0 Aylesbury
As the half drew to a close, there was another opportunity for the Ducks to increase their lead; Cove did well on the left and crossed to Kakembo who met the ball with a flying volley, but his effort was too high. Deep into added on time a drop ball in the centre of the pitch was passed to Stefanos Georgiou wide on the right who went past Cove and fired a dangerous low cross through the 6-yard box which no one could get a touch to.
Half-time: Aylesbury 2-0 Enfield
Into the second half and the visitors made an immediate change, with striker Kieran Southgate, who had arrived late to the ground, replacing Moncur. They were forced into a second change shortly after the restart, when John, who had taken a knock towards the end of the first half, replaced by Adam Yilmaz.
In contrast to the first half, it was the visitors who started the second period the better, no doubt stung by some words of wisdom during the half time break after a poor showing in the first 45 minutes. It took just 3 minutes for Enfield to get a goal back, as a ball into the penalty area wasn't dealt with by the defence, allowing Southgate to score with a looping header over Jack Hopwood and into the corner of the net. 2-1
On 55 minutes Southgate almost bagged a second, a long ball down the left to Yilmaz saw him cross to Southgate, but his volley was over the bar. Just before the hour, a pass down the left flank by Joyce found Kakembo; he outpaced visiting skipper Matthew Hurley and as Edgeworth came off his line, the striker put his effort across goal and out for a goal kick.
A couple of minutes later Yilmaz did well to outmuscle Peters on the left and pass infield to Southgate, who hit a first time shot from 18 yards just wide. The momentum was definitely with the visitors by this stage, with the Ducks conceding possession frequently and forced on the defensive.
In the 71st minute a good cross from George Thompson on the left found Southgate again, but his headed effort was just wide of target. The pressure finally told in the 74th minute, when a long clearance by Edgeworth found Southgate wide on the left; he cut inside towards the penalty area and fired a shot across Hopwood from 20 yards and into the far corner of the net. 2-2
The comeback was almost completed with 6 minutes on the clock, when a long ball forward saw Hopwood come off his line to clear, but his clearance fell to Southgate who volleyed narrowly wide of an open goal.
As the game entered the final minutes tempers became frayed and the match was in danger of boiling over. Thompson chased a ball through the defence only to see Hopwood quickly off his line to intercept; the striker went down in the penalty area, and with Ducks hearts in mouths, referee Stuart Smith blew his whistle and awarded a free kick to the home side, penalising Thompson for simulation with a yellow card, unfortunately for him, his second of the match, so he headed off for an early bath.
In the aftermath, Enfield coach Matthew Thoma was also shown a red card for his reaction to the earlier decision.
Into the 91st minute and Yilmaz crossed to fellow substitute Dimitri Christou, Bewley made a good tackle in the penalty area, but the ball fell kindly for Christou, sitting up to allow him a second chance, but Hopwood did well to block his shot.
The game ended in more controversy, as first Callum Taylor saw red after receiving a second yellow for a poor foul on the left side, before the Ducks saw Kian Henry shown a straight red card for swinging an elbow at an Enfield player in the last moments of the match.
A lot to unpick from a game that was essentially a 'dead rubber' for both sides at the end of what has been quite a trying season. The Ducks will be delighted with their first half form, and indeed, breaking the run of defeats; however, not taking all 3 points after a dominant first half display was another example of the defensive frailty that has been obvious since skipper Jack Wood suffered his season ending injury against Stotfold, early in that dismal run. In a game that only really sparked in the last 15 minutes, 4 red cards seemed to be a strange outcome, but all in all, most will leave the ground satisfied that the bad run is over, and indeed the season, one which we comfortably avoided relegation due mainly to the great early season form, is finally over.
The season saw post war club records created by the Ducks; successive League clean sheets at the start of the season, that promised so much as the season unfolded, ending with 12 successive defeats towards the end of the season. It should also be noted that through the season there were only 3 draws in League matches, which again, must be close to a club record.
We wish all supporters a happy summer break, and look forward to the next chapter in the club's history when we start again in August.
