Biggleswade Town completed the double against struggling Aylesbury United, with the Ducks downfall proving to be set pieces, as four goals were conceded from crosses into the penalty area as a result of corners or throw ins.
Three changes to the team that lost at home to Beaconsfield last time out; Liam Batchelor-Morgan replaced the injured Ex Buanga at full back, Rocko Tamplin returning instead of Lee Stobbs and James Bone making his first start in midfield in place of Sonny French. New signing, Jobe Gorst started the match on the bench.
The Waders started well, their fast and physical play causing problems for the Ducks defence, but in general, they weathered the opening exchanges well, defending resolutely, and repelling what was offered by the hosts.
The first chance came from a corner in the 16th minute; the ball was delivered by Basim Mirtahmasebi to Tom Baggaley at the far post, but his effort crashed off the post and was cleared by Christian Swaby.
Six minutes later, a ball forward found Josh Steele, who headed down to Cyrus Babaie, who shot from 20 yards, but straight at Jack Hopwood.
The Ducks had a great chance to open the scoring in the 25th minute, when a fine move from front to back created a chance for Reeves. Hopwood cleared the ball to Fabian Garcia, who moved it on to Reeves; the striker found Tamplin wide on the left, who returned the ball to Reeves, with his back to goal; he turned and fired in a shot which narrowly missed the keeper's left-hand post, with Jack Berman struggling to get across to save.
Five minutes later, and the Waders did take the lead. A long throw from skipper Nagheeb Ibrahim was headed on at the near post by Steele, to Emmanuel Dahie, unmarked in the 6-yard box who volleyed home. 1-0 Biggleswade
Half-time: Biggleswade 1-0 Aylesbury
The Ducks made a change at half time, French replacing the injured Bone, who had made a bright start on his first full appearance for the club. However, it was the visitors who made the better start to the second half, when a corner from the right by Damani Hunter was met by Dan Newton, who climbed higher than Jack Wood at the far post and headed home. 2-0 Biggleswade
On the hour mark the hosts added a third; again, it was from a corner, taken this time by Harrison Rookard, on as a substitute. The ball was headed down and fell to Babaie, who sidefooted home from 6 yards. 3-0 Biggleswade
Straight after the goal was conceded, the Ducks made two more substitutes, with Pow Raposo and Abdullah Jellal coming on to replace Tamplin and Hayden Beadle.
Stung by conceding the goal, the Ducks almost hit back with the next attack; a deep free kick from the left by Jake Bewley fell to Swaby, who saw his shot blocked, the ball falling to Wood, who also saw his effort cleared desperately by the home defence.
Just four minutes later, a pass from Batchelor-Morgan was intercepted in midfield by Mirtahmasebi, who played the ball forward to Rookard, cutting inside Bewley on the right; he shot from the edge of the penalty area, but could only see his effort go wide of the far post.
In the 82nd minute, the ball was lost on the half way line and played forward to Coree Wilson; he beat Swaby and attempted to go round Hopwood, who was adjudged to have fouled the striker in trying to clear the ball. Up stepped Steele to despatch the penalty, sending Hopwood the wrong way. 4-0 Biggleswade
Three minutes later the hosts added a fifth to heap more misery on Batchelor's team. Again, it came from a corner, delivered by Andrew Bennett to the far post, where this time it was Baggaley who rose highest, unchallenged in the 6-yard box, to head past Hopwood. 5-0 Biggleswade
The Ducks did get a consolation goal in the 89th minute, when a ball crossed in from the left by Bewley was headed back across goal and into the far corner of Berman's net by Swaby. 1-5
In truth, this was a disappointing result, a match that was a virtual repeat of the home match against the same opponents 3 months ago, when a bigger, more physical Waders team made their presence and strength felt, with the Ducks seemingly unable to deal with the aerial threat into the penalty area, despite holding out for most of the first half with resolute and determined defending. Much work to do in training in the week ahead as the team prepares for a tough looking assignment against Ware FC at the Meadow next Saturday.
