Fresh from the defeat at Welwyn Garden City last week, manager Paul Batchelor made four changes to the starting line up. The injury sustained in the previous week ruled out James Bone, replaced by Lee Stobbs, while Abdullah Jellal and Liam Batchelor-Morgan were rested to the bench, replaced by Sonny French and Luke Martin. The final change was also forced, with Pow Raposo having left the club to join Stotfold. He was replaced by Fin Reeves, back after missing the last game. New signing George Cleveland's debut was delayed due to issues with his registration being finalised.
In a true relegation 6-pointer, it was probably no surprise that the opening exchanges were cagey, with neither side able to throw a meaningful punch against the other as the game unfolded. It took until the 13th minute for the first chance to be created; a free kick taken by Reeves was well saved by George Edgeworth, Rocko Tamplin was quickly on the scene to get to the rebound, but he was beaten to the ball by the alert Matt Hurley, who cleared the danger.
Just past 20 minutes, a deep free kick by Aundre Wholas-Spencer was met by George Sykes, but his header from 10 yards was harmless and drifted wide of the goal. On the half hour, a corner from Charlie Anderson was headed goalwards and was bravely cleared off his goal line by Jack Hopwood, under severe pressure from Tobi Adeyemi. Hopwood was injured in the collision, leading to a long delay while the Ducks keeper received treatment from both physios. Fortunately, he was able to continue after treatment, despite being in discomfort.
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-0 Enfield
The second half started with the Ducks looking to be more positive going forwards; a long throw from Reeves was headed out to French 25 yards from goal, but his first time effort soared over the crossbar.
In the 54th minute, Jake Bewley did well on the left and found Reeves 30 yards from goal; he cut inside Hurley and shot from 30 yards, but his effort didn’t trouble Edgeworth.
Three minutes later, Reeves did open the scoring; a ball wide to Stobbs saw his pass inside to Frankie Bircham, who spotted the run of the young striker, playing the ball into his path. He shot early across Edgeworth and saw the ball nestle in the far corner to give the Ducks the lead. 1-0 Aylesbury
Three minutes later, the ball was won in midfield and passed inside to French; he found Tamplin 15 yards out, whose shot was straight at Edgeworth. A second goal soon arrived though; a pass forward found Reeves on the right, who cut inside Anderson and beat Edgeworth at his near post with his shot from the edge of the box. 2-0 Aylesbury
The Ducks sealed the game in the 79th minute, a long kick forward by Hopwood was headed on by Reeves to strike partner Tamplin, who gathered the ball well, drifted past Wholas-Spencer, before rounding Edgeworth and tapping the ball home. 3-0 Aylesbury
The icing on the cake was Reeves' hat trick in the 81st minute. Tamplin did well on the left and spotted his team mate breaking into the penalty area. He passed to him and Reeves did the rest, firing through the legs of Edgeworth to score his first senior hat trick. 4-0 Aylesbury
The final chance of the game came with just 2 minutes remaining; another long ball from Hopwood was headed on by Fabian Garcia to Tamplin, who took the ball forward, but saw his shot from the edge of the penalty area well blocked by Adeyemi.
So, a convincing win for the Ducks, who were dominant in the second half, and deserved the goals and the precious clean sheet, boosting the goal difference to make it almost worth another point on their rivals at the foot of the table. Next up is the much-delayed game against Ben Williams and his Thame side, on Wednesday evening at the Meadow.
