Following the postponement against Biggleswade FC in midweek, Jack Wells chose to stick with a winning team, naming the same starting eleven for the third consecutive match. The only change to the squad was new signing Keegan Bloom taking a seat on the sub’s bench in place of Jack Empson. Following the recent freezing weather, the pitch was only passed fit for play at 1.30, with both sides keen to for the match to go ahead. However, the pitch was far from perfect as seen many times with players losing their footing on the slippery surface through the game.
Despite playing down the hill and with the wind in their favour, the Ducks struggled to make an impression in the initial stages, a loose pass out from James Callan falling to Taylor Rhiney, but his shot from 25 yards was wide of the goal. The hosts thought they da taken the lead three minutes later; a pass from Martel Powell found Rhiney in the inside right channel, who calmly slotted past Callan into the far corner. However, the celebrations were short lived as the Asst Referee’s flag was raised to indicate offside.
The first chance for the Ducks came in the tenth minute, Dave Pearce collecting a clearance and shooting from 25 yards, but it was an easy claim for home keeper Cameron Groom. The first goal duly arrived in the 23rd minute, following a flowing move down the left, involving first Jake Bewley then Rocko Tamplin, who exchanged passes with Pearce before firing home from 20 yards inside Groom’s near post. 1-0 Aylesbury
The hosts came close to an equaliser four minutes later, when Pat McCafferty played a ball over the defence to Ashton Grant, but he was stretching as he shot, and could only steer his shot wide of target. However, the scores were level on 31 minutes. Cheyce Grant did well to beat Lewis Crosbie on the left and cut into the penalty area and fired in a shot from 18 yards, which was blocked and fell to Rhiney, whose shot was deflected wide for a corner. Cheyce Grant took the kick and saw the ball swirl in the air and straight into the goal, despite Callan’s efforts to keep it out under pressure from a gaggle of players on his goal line. 1-1
The score was turned on its head two minute before half time, a second goal for Rovers coming in the same manner as their first; again, a corner from Cheyce Grant was curled in towards the goal and appeared to go straight into the net, although Rhiney claimed the final touch on the line. 2-1 Barton
Half-time: Barton Rovers 2-1 Aylesbury
Ten minutes into the second half and the lead should have been extended; a Jake Bewley free kick was intercepted by Grant, who played the ball out to Joshua Adeyileka on the right. His cross fell to Cheyce Grant at the far post, but he could only place his shot wide of the goal.
Following conceding two soft goals from corners in the first half, it was the Ducks turn next; a Pearce corner from the right was met with a firm downwards header from Jack Wood, who scored his 6th of the season to draw his team level. 2-2
In the 67th minute a long ball forward by McCafferty was being shepherded out of play for a goal kick by Bewley, when substitute Jemale Olayinka got his foot around the ball and kept it in play; he looked up and picked out Rhiney, but his shot was just wide of Callan’s left-hand post.
Four minutes later, Tom Silford on as a substitute for Cheyce Grant, took advantage when Crosbie slipped and made his way into the penalty area, before pulling the ball back to Olayinka on the edge of the area, but his shot was weak and straight at Callan.
Nine minutes from the close, a long ball down the left flank saw Ashton Grant draw Callan from his line and shoot past him; with Bewley and Rhiney running back towards the goal, it was the striker who got the vital touch to tap the ball home to allow his team to re-take the lead. 3-2 Barton
The game was made safe five minutes later, when Rhiney pulled the ball back to the edge of the penalty area to Silford, who was allowed time to get a shot away, which clipped the underside of the bar and fell into the net. 4-2 Barton
So, another disappointing result against a team also struggling at the wrong end of the season; a slide that is in desperate need of addressing. Next up would appear to be a great opportunity to do so, with the visit of bottom of the table Kempston Rovers to the Meadow on Tuesday evening.
