After the postponement of last week’s match at St Neots, the Ducks were able to welcome new signing Harry Scott to the starting line up, in place of the unavailable Dave O’Connor; to facilitate Scott’s place in attack, the versatile Harry Jones once again took the right back post.
Understandably on the defensive given the recent run of defeats, the Ducks started on the back foot, conceding an early corner. Visiting skipper Newman Carney’s delivery was met by the unmarked Tom Silford, but fortunately his free header from 12 yards went over the cross bar.
Shortly afterwards a clearance ricocheted to Nathan Frater, who found Silford through the middle, but Jones put in a good challenge, which resulted in a weak effort which was straight at Archie Davis.
The Ducks were forced into an early change on 13 minutes, with the unfortunate Ollie Hogg succumbing to a recurrence of his recent calf injury and was replaced by Anthony Ball.
Straight after the restart, a long ball down the left wing from Gideon Okito set a suspiciously offside looking Silford free; he crossed into the 6-yard box where an unmarked Kieran Hamilton met the ball and guided it past Davis to open the scoring. 1-0 AFC Dunstable
Just past the half hour a Carney free kick from the left edge of the penalty area was well cleared by Jordan Jenkins under pressure. From the corner Sam McLelland had a free header 8 yards out, but his effort was straight at Davis who saved comfortably.
It took until the 38th minute for the Ducks to have an attempt on goal, and it almost resulted in an equaliser; Jake Bewley took a free kick wide on the right which was headed out to the edge of the penalty area as far as Sonny French. His volley had visiting keeper Jamie Head beaten, but bounced away to safety off the cross bar.
However, the equaliser was not long in coming, as a mis-hit goal kick from Davis was flicked on by Bewley, towards French, who in turn moved the ball forward to Scott who outpaced Brett Longden and lobbed the advancing Head to bring the scores level. 1-1
With the final chance of the half, the Ducks came close to taking an unlikely lead, as Seaton drilled a free kick into the penalty area, where Jack Wood directed a header goalwards, only for Head to pull off a fine save.
Half-time: Aylesbury 1-1 AFC Dunstable
The second half was an attritional affair, as the Ducks defended stoutly, determined to take something from the game and end the disappointing run of results. Their hopes were not improved in the 64th minute, as Seaton stuck out a lazy leg to concede a foul in the centre circle, receiving a second yellow card for his indiscretion.
Worries that this setback would signal a downturn and lead to another defeat were unfounded, as the Ducks put up a resolute defensive showing, denying the visitors an opportunity on goal. The nearest they came was a long ball through the ball which Hamilton chased, but Davis was quickly off his line to take the ball and man simultaneously and clear the danger.
Indeed, the Ducks had the final (half) chance of the match, as substitute Ezra Anthonio-Forde collected a headed clearance from a corner and drove upfield. He passed back to David Ozobia, who in turn found Harry Jones, whose effort was cleared for a corner.
With no further chances for either side, the game ended all square, which was probably a fair result in a game low on chances, as the midfield and defences held firm. Nonetheless, this was a vital point for the Ducks, arresting the disastrous recent run of defeats and should offer some confidence ahead of the trip to Welwyn Garden City next Saturday.
