Off the back of a disappointing performance and loss at Beaconsfield on Saturday, Dave Tuttle made two changes to his team; Maks Jarzabek and Will St Clair Burton were replaced by Kajetan Halatyn and Gianni Massi.
The visitors started well and put the pressure on straight away. In the first minute, Jack Wood was injured blocking a shot from Ashley Kersey, with the ball rebounding out of the penalty area; it was sent back in again, forcing Jack Hopwood to parry the ball into the air and being indebted to Jake Bewley, who cleared the ball under pressure to relieve the early danger.
In the 9th minute Patrick Matejko wriggled past the challenges of both Wood and Bewley before firing in a shot from 10 yards that Hopwood did well to save at his near post. From the resulting corner Aaron Diviney headed the ball off the top off the crossbar and out for a goal kick. Three minutes later a strong run into the penalty area by Kersey saw him find space for a shot, which was blocked by Charley Tuttle, with the ball falling kindly for Hopwood to collect.
Midway through the half a Tom Cove pass to Sonny French was swept wide to Luqman Kassim in space on the left; he cut inside towards goal and shot to the near post, which forced Liam Gooch into a smart save.
In the 37th minute Matejko broke away down the left and pulled the ball back to Diviney, but his shot was saved by Hopwood.
As the half time break was looming, Callum Kane did well on the left, beat Ben Peters before crossing to Haroon Meriai, who passed the ball back to Kersey who shot wide of target from the edge of the penalty area.
Half-time: Aylesbury 0-0 Stotfold
Into the second half, a poor cross field pass by Bewley was intercepted by Kane, who shot just wide of the far post. Immediately afterwards, a Hopwood goal kick was again intercepted by Kane, this time his low cross was just missed by the onrushing Kersey. The next attack saw Kersey reach a cross from the left, but his looping header landed on the roof of the net.
A double change for the Ducks saw French and Halatyn withdrawn, new signing Chris Manangu and Will St Clair Burton joining the action.
Despite the fresh legs, it was still the visitors making all the running; on the hour, Matejko saw a low cross deflected to Meriai on the edge of the penalty area, but he saw his shot saved by the legs of Hopwood. From the resulting corner, Stotfold took the lead; a header down by Kersey was helped on by Dan Sears, but it appeared to be substitute Alex Coppin who turned the ball over the line, despite the efforts of Charley Tuttle at the near post. 1-0 Stotfold
Three minutes later Wood and Kersey challenged for the ball on the edge of the penalty area; as the ball dropped, Kersey reacted quickest and fired in a shot, but dragged his effort wide.
The Ducks had a good chance to hit back two minutes later, when Kassim broke into the penalty area and cut back onto his right foot, before seeing his shot saved by Gooch. With 15 minutes remaining on the clock, the best move of the evening from the Ducks saw them come so close to an equaliser. Cove did well in midfield before passing wide to Kassim on the left; he played a low cross into the 6-yard box, where Manangu arrived under pressure from Sears and Gooch, and saw his effort narrowly miss the target.
Sadly for the visitors, Gooch was injured in the attempt to keep the ball out, and after a 14-minute delay while he received treatment on the pitch, he was stretchered off with a leg injury. With no substitute goalkeeper available, Coppin donned the gloves for the last minutes of the game. Disappointingly for the Ducks, they were unable to mount an effort that would trouble the stand in keeper, and the game ended with little more in the way of goalmouth action.
News after the game was that Gooch hadn't sustained a break to his leg, which is good news and we wish him well.
Next up for the Ducks is the visit of Thame on Saturday, a game when the team will need to be up for the fight, if they are to address a dreadful recent record against our near neighbours.
